Midwest Relativity Meeting

October 2-3, 2009 in West Hall.

Abstract submission deadline September 23, 2009. Late submissions "will be scheduled as the program permits."

This conference covers evertyhing related to both special and general relativity. There is no cost to attend or present. The Blue Appe Award will be presented for the best talk by a graduate student. This meeting is sponsored by the department of physics.

Information, registration and abstract submission is at http://www.umich.edu/~mwrm/

Extreme Star Formation in Dwarf Galaxies workshop

July 27 - 29, 2009 in West Hall.

Registration deadline: June 26, 2009

Registration and more information is at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~ognedin/dwarf2009/

This workshop is on the extreme mode of star formation typically found in dwarf galaxies. The goal is to explore the formation and evolution of dark matter-dominated dwarfs and other systems, which are among the most actively debated topics in galaxy formation. All talks will be brief (15 minutes) with plenty of time set aside for discussion. Specific questions will include:
- what is the origin of their huge mass-to-light ratios?
- why was star formation so inefficient in their host dark matter halos?
- how low are the metal abundances of their stars and do they have any primordial lower limit?
- can the observed or potentially measurable velocity dispersions tell apart a cusp vs. a core in their centers?
- can the signatures of possible dark matter annihilation be detected?

Past Meetings, Seminars, and Workshops

"The Globular Clusters - Dwarf Galaxies Connection" workshop, sponsored by the MCTP and Astronomy Department, was August 27-29, 2007 on the University of Michigan campus. Information is available at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~ognedin/dwarf/

Lee Hartmann was the chair for the 2007 Gordon Research Conference on Origins of Solar Systems, which took place at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA on 8-13 July 2007.
