Astronomy and AOSS Research Symposium and Reception
The third annual Astronomy/Earth and Environmental Sciences/Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Research Symposium will be held on Wednesday April 18, 2012 from 2:00 to 5:00pm in 1528 CC Little Bldg. This is a professional symposium, with a goal of bringing together faculty and graduate students from AOSS, Astronomy and EES.
This year's theme is "Planetary Astrobiology." Mike Brown will give a keynote address.
See the Special Events page for more details.
Past Meetings, Seminars, and Workshops
Marta Volonteri is on the organizing committee for the workshop "What Drives The Growth Of Black Holes?" to be held in Durham, England on 19-22 April 2010. The workshop seeks to answer the questions:
- How does gas accrete onto black holes, from ~kpc scales to <1 pc
scales? - What are the links between black-hole growth and their host
galaxies and large-scale environments? - What fuels the rapid growth of the most massive (and also the
first) black holes? - What is the detailed nature of AGN feedback and its effects on
black hole fueling and star formation?
More information and registration is available at http://astro.dur.ac.uk./growthofblackholes/.
Mateusz Ruszkowski and Gus Evrard are organizing a workshop entitled "The Physics of the Intracluster Medium: Theory & Computation" to take place August 23-25, 2010. The workshop may also be of interest to researchers working on astrophysical fluid dynamics, MHD, turbulence, simulations, cosmic rays, black hole feedback, and other related fields.
A list of topics, invited speakers, registration and other information is available at http://www.umich.edu/~mctp/SciPrgPgs/events/2010/Plasma/Home.html.
Margo Aller is on the scientific organizing committee for the international meeting "Multiwavelength Variability of Blazars" to be held in Guangzhou, China 22 September 2010. She will also present an invited talk during the meeting.
Early registration runs through 31 May, 2010, and the abstract deadline is 10 August.

Midwest Relativity Meeting
October 2-3, 2009 in West Hall.
This conference covered everything related to both special and general relativity. There is no cost to attend or present. The Blue Apple Award will be presented for the best talk by a graduate student. This meeting is sponsored by the department of physics.
Information, registration and abstract submission is at http://www.umich.edu/~mwrm/
"Extreme Star Formation in Dwarf Galaxies workshop" was July 27 - 29, 2009 in West Hall. The website remains online at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~ognedin/dwarf2009/
"The Globular Clusters - Dwarf Galaxies Connection" workshop, sponsored by the MCTP and Astronomy Department, was August 27-29, 2007 on the University of Michigan campus. Information is available at http://www.astro.lsa.umich.edu/~ognedin/dwarf/
Lee Hartmann was the chair for the 2007 Gordon Research Conference on Origins of Solar Systems, which took place at Mt. Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA on 8-13 July 2007.
